Anything Like The Moon

I’m a big boy now, turned ten in the spring
I’d like to be an astronaut for NASA more than anything
My Dad, he understands me
He woke me at three in the morning to watch the TV
And he said to me:

We need to share this moment
The biggest thing in human history
 You can’t compare this moment
To any other sight you’ll ever see

But what do I see?
Top of the screen is an ocean of blackness
Underneath that is a splodge of off-white
Some kind of grey smudge that might be a ladder
Some kind of ghost drifting down left to right
Is this a joke?  Is it the real thing?
This TV set hasn’t been properly tuned
I’ve seen a lot of sci-fi for children
And this doesn’t look anything like the Moon
But he said to me:

We need to share this moment
The biggest thing in human history
 You can’t compare this moment
To any other sight you’ll ever see

But what do I see?
Where are the craters, the great jagged mountains?
Where’s the night sky full of stars by the million?
Where’s the big rocket-fin next to the camera?
Where’s the unnerving and slow-moving alien?
Is this a joke?  Is it the real thing?
This TV set hasn’t been properly tuned
I’ve seen a lot of sci-fi for children
And this doesn’t look anything like the Moon

But I’ll replay this moment
So many times within my memory
And I will say this moment
Beats any other sight I’d ever see
Beats any other sight I’d ever see
Beats any other sight.
