Capability

Here’s the lagoon, here is the land
Here are the monsters fashioned by Man. . .

Once upon a time there was no mountain here
Now there is a mountain, smooth and very sheer
Now the mountain has a cleft that opens wide
Now emerge two giants, slowly, side by side.

Quarter-Moon above the eastern sea
Shines upon human temerity
They are striving to lay claim to thee
Think they have the capability.

Now the giants move along at stately pace
Up the giants’ road towards their resting-place
Now the mountain closes its colossal door
Guarding all its secrets as it had before.

Quarter-Moon above the eastern sea
Shines upon human temerity
Is there method in their lunacy?
Do they have the capability?

Now the giants stand alone, the red and white
Seeming even taller in the dawning light
Now there is a tension in the autumn air
Some great power gathering, we must beware.

Quarter-Moon above the eastern sea
Shines upon human temerity
Soon see if their ingenuity
Has evolved the capability.
